D’art Gallery, located at 900 Santa Fe Drive, hosts “It’s a Mystery” a duet exhibition by Barbara DeMarlie and Carrie MaKenna, from February 15th through March 10th, 2024. An Artist’s Reception is scheduled for Saturday, February 17th from 1-5 pm.

This exhibition pairs two long-time local artists Barbara DeMarlie and Carrie MaKenna. Both artists work in acrylic paint on canvas and engage the mysteries of life on earth and in the universe through their art-making practices.

DeMarlie’s work delves into the mysteries of the earth. She explores these mysteries through colorful semi-abstract paintings, mono-prints, and mixed media pieces. Of her work, Barbara says, “I attempt to reach out / without words / into the unknown and known of us all. It is often unstable, unfixed, fragments of nature, the figure of architecture, bits of an image, but all relevant. Put paint on, take it away, embellish, rub it off, add a layer, cover it again, do the dance, struggle, trust, create your truth.”

MaKenna pursues the mysteries of the universal circle in this exhibition, exploring the cycles of nature, life, and relationships. Describing her practice Carrie says, “I make artwork to remind people of their interconnection with each other, nature, and the Universe. I use a thick acrylic paste to lay down a textural surface, then add a variety of objects, dried paint, and other elements to bring the mystery to life on the canvas.”
