Line of sight, line of thought, line of demarcation… The use of line is an important element in the path of Sandy Marvin's life as an artist and it is a common theme in this collection of her work. The essence of calligraphy is the creation of line of varied weight, direction and character to form letters with a pen or brush, sometimes disciplined and traditional and other times free-flowing expressive. This was her art career for 20 years. Expressive, fluid line led her to a love of drawing, particularly line contour and brush work.

Although Sandy has not incorporated writing into her landscape and still-life painting, her calligraphy background helps to define her work. Sandy has noted that she feels the directness of a visible line or stroke helps to create a connection between the viewer and the hand and heart of the artist.

Working in acrylic, solar relief etchings, and monotypes, Phyllis Rider explores process as a means of discovery. Beginning with simple forms and intuitive marks, each work develops through layered color, rhythmic line, and textured surfaces that create movement and depth. Rather than following a predetermined outcome, Rider embraces experimentation, inviting viewers into abstract spaces that balance energy with moments of quiet contemplation and serenity.
