Artist on Santa Fe at 747 Santa Fe Drive will showcase work by gallery member Kris Iltis from Aug 1-31, 2024. Typically known for her oil painting, this show will instead highlight her unique approach to ceramics and gel-plate mono-prints in an exhibition entitled “A Troubling of Koi”. A group of Koi fish is curiously referred to as a “Troubling” — along the lines of a “murder of crows” or “pride of lions” — and feature prominently as a theme throughout this collection.

The public is invited to view the show on Opening Night, August 1, 5-9 p.m., during the First Friday Art Walk, and to an Artist Reception on Friday, August 16, 6-8 p.m. and during regular gallery hours as listed below.

Having grown up in Japan, Ilitis’ ceramic work combines influences from her childhood including the iconic Japanese koi, but with a rough, organic aesthetic. Hanging platters, uneven bowls, slumped, cracked and bubbled, all featuring images of koi, celebrate a unique imperfection. Her prints on paper use a silicone gel plate. She hand-cuts stencils and applies acrylic inks in layers. Vibrant, textural designs evoke themes of movement and the interplay between light and shadow. Koi shapes move about the surface, some under a bright moon, others in undulating waters.

The collection celebrates a fusion of cultures, and exploration of mediums and the experience of leaving the final result to chance.

Artists on Santa Fe Gallery at 747 Santa Fe Drive showcases the work of member artists ranging from sculptors and painters to printmakers and jewelers. Regular hours are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 11 am to 3 pm, Fridays and Saturdays, 11 am to 5 pm and Sundays, Noon to 4 pm, The building is also home to the working studios of 25 + artists.
