Rohrig starts each artwork with no specific plan. They first lay down a bit of color, then spontaneously add ink to paper, creating an instinctual framework of flowing lines. Abstract figures and deconstructed forms reveal themselves within the “scribbles” to shape the direction of the drawing. The human bodies that emerge convey a notable softness in their portrayal and interaction. Rohrig then incorporates flora and fauna using a variety of art styles and drawing techniques. These and other symbolic elements help render a complete story of each piece.
“Coming out late in life while simultaneously discovering my love and talent for drawing, these works are a visual of my journey to find out who I am and to learn to love without boundaries,” explains Rohrig, “My drawings feature moments from my intimate life, bodies of my lovers, representations of conversations, specific emotions conveyed through symbolism, and hopes for what the future may bring. Through all these explorations and expressions, my gender and sexuality are the foundation. As a bisexual and nonbinary person, the fluidity experienced in my love life is vast and validating.”
