Save The Aztlan!

  • Aztlan Theatre 976 Santa Fe Drive Denver, CO, 80219 United States (map)

The Aztlan Theatre is a historic theatre in the heart of Denver, Colorado and a standing pillar in the Art District on Sante Fe. The theatre originally showcased Spanish-speaking films and evolved into a hub for the city’s Latin culture and music scene. The name of “Aztlan” comes from the ancestral home of the Aztec peoples.

This August, ADSF is partnering with Hoppers and Mile High Drum and Bass to save the historic Aztlan Theater. As part of this fundraising event—which will include a 10+ DJ lineup, local vendors, local food discounts, and more—we will be curating a showcase of local art that speaks to the meaning of Aztlan, both literally and rhetorically, in our community. All funds will go to the owner for repairs, maintenance, and financial needs.

There is an open call for artists to submit art for an art show that will be hung within the venue. The submissions must represent the concept of “home.” Being that the Aztlan played a central role in the Chicano movement in the 60s to 80s, the theme of home pertains to questions such as:
- What is “home”?
- What community spaces, rituals, and traditions are home to you?
- What happens when homes change or we leave them behind?
- How do we create and maintain feelings of kinship and belonging in different “homes” throughout our lives?

Submit your art in the link below! Submissions close July 21st.
