Lois R. Lupica’s Cold Wax + Oil work reflects progressive, incremental, and continuous process of adding and subtracting layers of oil paint, and cold wax medium. Multiple layers of translucent color are applied and then removed, leaving hints, wisps and sometimes blocks of lucent color. The work uses colors found in the natural world: the blues and lavenders of dusk and night, the reds, yellows and golds of fall, and the greens and grays of the mountains and meadows. Images of nature are abstracted to focus the viewer on the elicited emotion.
Lupica's encaustic works are bold, colorful, and three-dimensional. The sheen of the wax enhances the bright pigments, and the compositions are abstract and playful. The viewer can get lost in the depth, complexity and fun found in each piece.
Taylor Coble's work in Elsewhere are not photographs. Rather, they are mixed media pieces involving Coble's photography, his painting background, and a restless pursuit of artist alchemy. The selected works for this show are prints of the original mixed media pieces.
Coble sees photography is simply a medium used as a vehicle for documentation, communication, and expression. The camera is a tool used to garner information, and he views the photograph through the eyes of a painter. The raw photograph is not the final product, and he feels relationships between content and composition beckon further exploration. The pursuit of artistic expression is also a search for truth; for him, the truth is discovered on the cutting room floor. The editing process is a wholly visceral experience. The merit of the piece is measured by the emotion of the viewer.
