Sync Gallery Presents "Discoveries" by Jean Herman & Taylor Coble

  • SYNC Gallery 931 Santa Fe Dr. #100 Denver, CO, 80204 United States (map)

All of Jean Herman’s artwork is about making discoveries. It might be about discovering a unique and special place, with inspiration coming from colors or the movement of water and clouds. In her more figurative work, it is a discovery about the people she meets. This work is more emotional as it demands a personal connection.

Throughout her life, Herman has sketched the human figure, studying body movement and facial expressions. Unlike many artists, she absolutely loves drawing hands and feet. Herman has said that she finds “the story of a person's life is often found in the lines and shapes of their hands, as well as in their face.”

Herman’s work is eclectic in style, created in fabric, enhanced with collage, paint, and stitching. You will experience landscapes, figurative work, and abstract work, all intriguing and complex.

Taylor Coble not a photographer in the traditional sense, but he is a visionary; a practicing, restless artist that uses parts of media with the goal of forming a whole. A camera is a tool for expression, but so is a paint brush, a word processor, the black and white keys of a piano, et al.

In 2015, he was compelled to pick up a camera out of boredom and curiosity. Coble been a painter for a number of years and felt his brush had been played out. He was drawn to the black and white photographs that documented the people and places of the last 150 years. Sometimes they were heartening, and sometimes they were harrowing... but they were always interesting. Would it be possible to channel that old feeling into new expressions of art?

Thousands of photographs later, Coble tried to make sense of the source material on the cutting room floor. It was then that he started to build a narrative, a story of sorts. It was street photography in its rawest form. A necessary ingredient, yes, but the cake was still only half baked. It was a slow labor of love. Coble notes, “I still don't know how to use a camera, but I know how to work one. And a tattered paint brush can still talk. Let them live in harmony.”
