SYNC Gallery presents ETUDES by Lois R. Lupica and Chad Henry

  • SYNC Gallery 931 Santa Fe Dr. #100 Denver, CO, 80204 (map)

Etudes in music are short compositions, typically written with the motive of practicing and demonstrating technical mastery. Lupica & Henry’s work in ETUDES, sited at the intersection of abstraction and abstracted realism, reveal the artists’ explorations and experiments in composition, color theory and novel techniques in collage, painting and pigment application.

Lupica’s encaustic paintings are filled with bright colors and reveal lively, positive energy and dramatic movement. Her cold wax + oil works are contemplative studies in contrast and discord. Each piece demonstrates a strong technical mastery of mediums and reflects Lupica’s varied experiences and influences.

In ETUDES, Henry is working in the spirit of recycling and repurposing. From his studio full of old, unsold, largely unseen (abstract) acrylic paintings, he has knifed canvases, cut them up, rearranged, edited, and collaged each piece onto a fresh canvas, to see if they could take on a new, happier life. Could these paintings be scrambled to achieve a stronger, more spirited life? Sometimes the results are pleasant surprises, other times, well, they’re studies, after all.
