Nature Secrets – Solo Exhibition by Dan Baumbach

The solo exhibition, “Nature Secrets” by Dan Baumbach showcases abstract and semi abstract macro photographs of grasses, leaves, and clouds. In the fall, he captures the vibrant colors of the prairie grasses. In the winter, he walks the creeks photographing decaying leaves and ice to create haunting and playful images. Besides looking down, Dan always checks out the sky for interesting cloud formations.

His process includes wandering around prairies and creeks with a digital camera outfitted with a macro lens or close focusing telephoto zoom. Baumbach works with available light and various camera lenses to focus on macro images highlighting color, shapes and overall relationships of the objects. Then he moves into his studio to process the raw digital images and print the final impression on an archival large-format Epson printer.

Baumbach has been taking photographs for most of his life, beginning in his twenties working in New York City in advertising and fashion photography. After moving to California, he became involved in large format landscape photography around the Marin County Watershed and Yosemite National Park. In Colorado he mainly focus on macro photographs of grasses, leaves, clouds and water. His work is on display in the Boulder Community Hospital, The Ritz Carleton in Beaver Creek, The Sheraton Hotel in Avon, Price Waterhouse, UCSF Medical Center, and Good Samaritan Hospital. He has participated in the Boulder Open Studios for the past nine years.

Menagerie II: Three Sides To Every Story – Solo Exhibition by Lori Dresner The solo exhibition by Lori Dresner, “Menagerie II: Three Sides To Every Story”, features a unique personal expression that carries her work beyond the confines of utilitarian pottery into an enchanting, whimsical world she creates on large three sided vessels, colorful mugs, artful plates and platters.

Lori begins with simple line drawings etched into the surface of smooth white porcelain using a technique of inlaying slip into the lines called Mishima. As the characters emerge, so do the stories and the backgrounds. Lori then adds color with under glazes and finishes with transparent glaze.

With a gleeful look into the fantasy world of creatures, some of her characters are based on reality and some are imaginary creatures playing with each other in illusory scenarios. Most of her porcelain vessels are three sided. The triangular surface has predominated in her work over the years. Her colorful mugs are designed bring joy and a smile to anyone’s morning coffee. The plates and platters are simple porcelain pieces, providing elegant canvases for illustrations that depict an evolutionary world above and below the ground.

Lori Dresner received a BFA in ceramics from The Rhode Island School of Design; an MA in ceramics from the University of Michigan; and an MFA in video arts from the Art Institute of Chicago. She works in her Denver studio but manages to spend a good deal of time in the mountains of Colorado.
