New Work from Susan Rubin and Barbara Carpenter
and Patricia Miller in the North Gallery
October 12 — November 5, 2017

Susan Rubin presents Brushstrokes: the nature of color in Monet’s garden. Rubin writes, “Working from my own observations, sketches, color studies and photographs gathered during a week in this remarkable garden in May of 2016, I break with convention and use colored pencils as paint, carefully mixing the complex hues of each bloom. Each drawing defines a single ‘brushstroke’ in the wild Impressionist’s palette that is Monet’s garden.”

Barbara Carpenter presents Through the Looking Glass. Carpenter writes, “At best, the mirror presents us with a reversed view of ourselves (ergo a “mirror image”).  The more distorted the glass, the more removed from reality, or the actual image, we are presented.  I have always been fascinated with reflections that allow our imaginations to run wild or just to enjoy the image as a visual whole unrelated tothe subject.  All of these photographs were shot through glass bricks.  Some were then further worked in photoshop, some not.”

Patricia Miller presents Dream State in the North Gallery. She writes, “I have been experimenting more recently with photography and photomontage, extracting components from my original photos, adding an occasional graphic element from my family archives or from the public domain, and using basic digital techniques to create fabrications that mimic the dream state.”
