Students in this workshop will be using the box structure as a vessel for images and objects. We will work in the style of Joseph Cornell, Janice Lowry, Louise Nevelson, and folk art traditions to create mixed-media box sculptures. Of course, any parts that migrate outside the box are welcome.
Students need to bring their own materials such as found box structures and found objects. Wooden boxes are preferred. They will also need to bring paper and fabric for collage, paint and brushes and tools needed.
I will provide gel medium for adhering collages, additional pigments, a variety of hand and power tools, hardware, and adhesives. I will help students get started, give compositional suggestions, help solve joining challenges, so that students can transform ordinary and random images and objects into unique works of art.
Some art making experience is helpful, but experience in sculpture is not necessary.
