Out of the Quiet

  • D'art Gallery 900 Santa Fe Drive Denver, CO 80204 United States (map)

The exhibition features Sandi Miot, Laura Brenton, Emily Oldak, and Vicky Smith. Four artists explore their interpretations of the concept of “Out of the Quiet” utilizing various media and differing perspectives in paintings, ceramics, and installation. The exhibition runs from Thursday, June 6, 2024, through Sunday, June 30th, 2024, with an Artists’ Reception on Friday, June 14th from 6-8 pm.

Vicky Smith: Vicky’s ceramic work embraces organic forms and the shadows they create. She explores the distorting shape of shadows while reflecting on how our perceptions, memories, and assumptions play a part in, and sometimes contort, how we see and what we see. She thinks about how human beings often seek out patterns, similarities, and connections in an attempt to relate to a larger story and thus, to help make sense of our world. Continually thinking about the complexity of society, Vicky considers how we are infinitesimal witnesses and participants of a much larger system.

Emily Oldak: Emily uses this theme to push past expectations and move beyond creative limits. Her current works of assemblages and paintings have emerged from this concept of Out of the Quiet, onto traditional and nontraditional surfaces. A chair and a footstool have been repainted with an imaginative and refreshing look. Other delightful pieces also push the imagination and open to new perspectives.

Sandi Miot: Sandi’s mixed media work and encaustic paintings focus on climate change and man-made chaos. This exhibition of works features small encaustic coral sculptures that address the decline, quietly and insidiously, in the coral reefs of our planet and seek to bring more awareness to this very important issue. Her paintings and installations symbolize the hidden turbulence and currents in our daily lives that tend to be missed. Sandi has traveled extensively, painting and sculpting her feelings about the events and happenings around her.

Laura Brenton: Laura’s abstract paintings are grounded in movement, reflecting her dance background. Listening deeply, she follows that which comes from Out of the Quiet, where the inspiration for her paintings arises. Painting with her fingers, brushes, squeegees, and using various mark-making materials, Laura dances the paint around the canvas, always following the movement. She uses bold, vibrant colors resulting in a combination of energy and stillness. Her work is about beauty, mystery, and connection.
