Artists on Santa Fe presents an exhibition of collage works and fiber art by gallery members Michelle Lundquist and Terise Harrington Phillips. “Material Connections” runs from Feb. 1 through Feb. 25, 2024, at 747 Santa Fe with a public Artist Reception on Friday, Feb. 16 from 5-8:30 pm. These mediums are enjoying a resurgence of interest and awareness and are being taken more seriously by the art world as a celebration of their aesthetic value.
Lundquist and Phillips work in different mediums but their commonality lies in the love of combining elements into an assemblage and in the texture and detail they bring into their art. Lundquist is drawn to found objects, old photographs, and other artifacts that have been discarded or forgotten over time. She thoughtfully combines and layers the elements using a variety of mediums such as paint, collage, and stitching to create a cohesive finished work. Phillips begins her pieces by hand-dying fabric and then manipulating it with paint and stitching to form an ebb and flow of texture and design. Through their processes, each artwork takes on a life of its own with interesting and unexpected results.
Lundquist began her art career in 1974 at Metropolitan State University in Denver and later at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. Phillips received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Colorado State University in 1980. Their 20-year connection began when both took a fiber arts class at the Art Students League of Denver. Through the years both have shown their art in numerous galleries and exhibitions in the Denver area and western United States. They share a studio at Prism Workspaces located at 999 Vallejo Street in Denver.
