The Mix Group Show featuring Mark Friday, Nancy Enyart, Victoria Eubanks and Kristy Melodia

The Mix Group Show featuring Mark Friday, Nancy Enyart, Victoria Eubanks and Kristy Melodia

November brings the second of two group shows featuring artists from The Mix Co-op at Niza Knoll Gallery, 915 Santa Fe Drive. Work by Mark Friday, Nancy Enyart, Victoria Eubanks and Kristy Melodia will be on view Nov 1 – Dec 22, 2024, with a public Artists Reception on Friday, Nov 15, 5-8 pm.

The Mix has been in the back space of Niza Knoll Gallery since it opened in 2010. While the roster of member artists has shifted over the years, their art styles always meld well together and are a wonderful addition to the monthly featured exhibition. Once a year they split up and host two group shows in the main gallery. Long-time member Nancy Enyart will continue to charm viewers with her hand-built ceramic pieces featuring all manner of creatures great and small—rhinos, birds, elephants and more! Sometimes solo, sometimes paired with friends or perched on structures, her sculptural pieces have muted colors but plenty of personality.

Victoria Eubanks is a mixed-media artist and long-time co-op member. The work in this show aims to give viewers a sense of place or sense of space—physical or dreamlike. Her paintings offer purposeful shapes; leaves, houses, chairs, a ladder, roughly rendered and reminiscent of something you can’t quite put your finger on. They offer intangible connection.

Mark Friday expresses his quirky sense of humor through his assemblage sculptures. Some works in this show are figurative and filled with character, while others conjure fun contraptions or meaningless mechanisms. All are interesting collections of found objects combined to make something new and unique.

Having been a co-op member in previous years, Kristy Melodia, has rejoined The Mix! Finding her inspiration in humor and nature, this exhibit will showcase her delightful ceramic bee-hive bud vases and life-like sneaker sculptures. Her fabric-art skills will also be on display with colorful, dimensional “paintings” made from wool.

Niza Knoll Gallery is located at 915 Santa Fe Drive in Denver’s popular Art District on Santa Fe and specializes in intriguing conceptual exhibits featuring work by local and regional artists. The gallery participates in the district's First Friday, Third Friday, and Sundays on Santa Fe events in addition to hosting private concerts, and guest speakers associated with the exhibitions. The Mix Co-op, an integral part of the gallery, features eight local artists and is open during regular hours Thursday–Sunday, 1–4 pm. Visit www.nizaknollgallery.com to view and purchase works online and for the most up-to-date calendar of events.

Intuition

Intuition

In his abstract mixed media paintings, Hugh Daly has found an affinity for including collage as an element in randomly dissecting loose lines, organic shapes, value and color, and as a vehicle for discovery. Hugh’s work is centered on process, which begins with both opaque and transparent layers of color and line as a base on the canvas and takes on new and interesting dimensions with the introduction of collage. Painting, drawing and collaging layer over layer, new images emerge from beneath.

These images are captured and manipulated, then often forced to recede yet again beneath a new layer of paint, drawing and collage until a harmonious balance has been achieved between figure and ground, between image and content. Hugh sometimes chooses to incorporate representational elements into his work – people, animals, nature - which embody a personal homage to significant thoughts, dreams, places and points in time.

According to Elvi Bjorkquist, abstract art creates “an expressive symbol” that is grasped in an act of “intuition” that has a “single and unmysterious meaning. Her artwork is non-discursive, and denotes not facts but expresses the forms of feeling and forms of meaning that are not able to be objectified in discursive terms and are not “sayable.” She invites the viewer into a constructed fictional space that encourages them to interact with the composition in a way that is unique to them. Elvi's works are symbols and a study of feeling. This offers her the ability to place multiple layers of transparent colors giving her a greater range of interesting colors and results in a greater depth to the piece.

She uses suggestive and expressive marks in a more thoughtful and conscious ways to allude to aspects of the natural environment and a connection to the earth. She creates layers of colors and marks, using intuition to guide her deeper into a presentation of her feelings until the visual elements command attention. This show captures the emotion of the moment of creation and offers, through an open personal gaze, a free interpretation of the stories behind the works and invites the viewer into the emotional subconscious of the artists.

Black Friday Special Beer Release

On Black Friday, forget about that shiny big ass TV, new time sucking gaming system, standing in ridiculous lines of people at the butt crack of dawn. Instead sleep in and pop on over to Renegade Brewing for some well deserved me time. Black Friday is the start of a long weekend, a day or two to get away from the family and lounge in the glory of barrel aged beers.

Originally started by Goose Island Brewing out in Chicago, it immediately became embraced by breweries nationwide. This year at Renegade Brewing for Black Friday we will be lining our draft lines with some heavy hitters from some of our friends and favorite brands we have tried over the years. This year, we will be featuring a total of seven barrel aged beers available on draft. Featuring a few barrel aged imperial stouts, a barrel aged adjunct laiden fluffernutter madness imperial stout, a cuvee blend, a bourbon barrel aged quad fermented on montmorency cherries and lambic culture and a few surprises along the way.

We will have a bluegrass band pickin away early in the afternoon, followed up by a one man guitar solo act performed by local legend Matt Falaherty. We will have food trucks all day, so come hungry and thirsty, and leave content. Expect these beers to stay on tap through the weekend or watch the last one pour before your very eyes. Don't sleep in too long as these delectable treats won't last that long.

Stay tuned every week leading up to Black Friday for more details about the beers we will be releasing. Heck, if we told you everything all at once, where would be the fun in that? This is just one tradition we love dearly and one that we could not let pass without a celebration of barrel aged beers!

Santos is Art in Celebration of Our Heritage!

One of the oldest living folk art traditions in the United States is the creation of devotional art that depicts divine icons and symbols, particularly Catholic patron saints.

Santos “Saints” are made with wood and bultos are painted or unpainted scupltures. Retablos are devotional paintings redder that are on wood. Santos use nature pigments native to the land because when this art form started priests had to travel to Chihuahua Mexico for supplies. Supplies were very expensive and this led to the use of indigenous painting techniques and material that were native to the land. This tradition dates back for over 4 centuries to when the Spanish settlers first arrived in the Southwest.

First Friday's iamnotunique illustrations Opening Reception

Friday, Nov 1st we will be hosting an Opening Reception for our November featured artist, @i.amnotunique! This event is free and open to the public as part of our First Friday events!

Here's a little bit about Sara: "iamnotunique is an artist living and working in Denver, Colorado. Originally from Buffalo, she's shown her work in a variety of shows in Colorado and New York over the last 9 years. Although she draws from personal experiences, she inevitably finds viewers relating to what she thought were unique experiences. That, along with several other reasons, are the why behind the name: 'So often do we feel alone in our emotions, but the reality is, we're not unique, and there's a comfort in that.'"

6-8pm, light refreshments will be served.
