New Works at Sync Gallery

In Everything Must Go, Tiana Graves' photographs capture the quiet unraveling of a life during an estate sale, where personal belongings become artifacts of the past. Once-cherished objects, rich with unknown stories, are examined, priced, and dispersed, shifting from intimate to impersonal. These time-capsule portraits explore the tension between memory and transaction, revealing the fleeting nature of ownership and the traces we leave behind. What becomes of life when reduced down to its possessions?

In Alexandra Elliott's New Works, she considers the concepts of re-creation and resurrection of brokenness. She works in the medium of broken glass and watercolor on canvas and likes to challenge the concept of beauty and wholeness by creating abstract works with what most would consider objects that are no longer useful. Through her work, she is greatly inspired by the Japanese concept of Wabi- Sabi or the ‘embracing of the flawed or imperfect’. Alexandra believes that no matter how broken, with proper attention anything can be transformed into something more beautiful than before. She hopes that others may subjectively feel the essence of Wabi- Sabi and be able to look at art and the world as a whole through a unique and ever questioning lens.

Each curve is a deliberate stroke that fosters a sense of direction and momentum, inviting engagement and exploration.

Through the integration of curves into her paintings, she strives to create work that resonates with dynamic energy, celebrates the beauty of nature, and evokes a positive emotional response. “Conquering the Curve” is also a guiding philosophy that represents her commitment to embracing the challenges of creativity and transforming them into opportunities for expression.

Calzavara has been creating art professionally for over 20 years. Trained in multiple mediums including oils, acrylics, encaustics and resins, she is able to design a variety of unique artwork. Her series span realism, abstraction, impressionism and surrealism with her most recent pieces focusing on movement and intense colors. For more information visit aprettypainting.com. "Luminescence" at Sync Gallery
May
15
to Jun 15

"Luminescence" at Sync Gallery

In "Luminescence," the transformative properties of encaustic and cold wax techniques emerge as a vehicle for Lois Lupica and Dagmar Nickerson to explore the elusive nature of light. This collection investigates the delicate interplay between opacity and transparency, where light both penetrates and reflects from multilayered surfaces.

Lupica's encaustic works capture light's journey through translucent beeswax layers, creating a luminous depth impossible to achieve in other mediums. The abstracted imagery investigates the paradox of permanence and impermanence—the way wax's ancient durability contrasts with the ephemeral quality of the effects it creates. The works invite viewers to experience how changing light conditions transforms each piece throughout the day, revealing new depths and subtleties with each viewing.

Adjacent are cold wax compositions offering a different luminosity—more subdued yet equally compelling in their soft, diffused glow that seems to emanate from within the painting itself. Cold wax medium, with its unique matte translucency and dimensional possibilities, allows Lupica to build surfaces that interact with light. By combining the medium with oil paints and incorporating various additives, she creates works with depth and subtle luminescence that shifts as viewing conditions change. Cold wax's distinctive material properties transform ambient light into an active participant in the artwork.

Nickerson, through her abstract encaustic mixed media collages, explores the delicate interplay between destruction and survival. Working with paper she incorporates organic elements such as leaves, flowers, reeds, and seeds - materials intrinsically tied to the earth's cycles. The fire element is integral to her process. Flames scorch and shape the paper, leaving charred edges and intricate designs layered in the wax.

The layers of wax envelope the natural materials, their luminous quality adding depth, translucency and a sense of preservation. The wax not only bonds the elements together but also creates a tactile interplay of light and shadow, inviting the viewer to peer into the layers of meaning within in each piece. Each piece carries the natural beauty of what stands to become lost through climate change, while simultaneously celebrating the resilience and survival instincts of all living things.

Throughout this exhibition, viewers are invited to witness how these ancient and contemporary wax techniques can transform pigment and natural elements into luminous fields that shift with changing light conditions. The works exist in a space between painting and sculpture, where surface texture, dimensional quality, and embedded elements create an experience that changes with both light and perspective. Luminescence celebrates the paradox of wax as both barrier and conduit—trapping light even as it allows its passage—creating works that hover between revelation and concealment, inviting contemplation beyond what is immediately visible.

Waves of Hope: Whispers from the Deep

to Jul 13

Waves of Hope: Whispers from the Deep

Waves of Hope: Whispers from the Deep is a collaborative and immersive art exhibition experience at D’art Gallery, at 9th and Santa Fe Dr. in the heart of the Arts District on Santa Fe, that showcases the splendor of the oceans, the challenges our oceanic ecosystems face, and solutions that can make a positive difference locally and globally. The exhibition runs June 19 – July 13, 2025, with an opening reception Friday June 20, 6-9pm. Additional events are scheduled, and all are free and open to the public.

This ocean-centric exhibition, Waves of Hope: Whispers From The Deep, is born from a heartfelt desire to raise awareness about the meaningful ways we can help the health of our oceans from here in Colorado. Even when we live a thousand miles away from the oceans, our daily decisions can have a positive impact on the oceans.

Colorado is the headwaters for seven major rivers that flow into the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. How we live our lives can have a positive or negative impact on the water quality of these rivers that feed into the ocean providing nutrients and oxygen to the myriad of ocean life forms that inhabit these waters.

“Our actions over the next 10 years will determine the state of the ocean for the next 10,000 years.” – Sylvia Earl

The curator of this exhibition, Natalie Becker says, “It’s not just a collection of my own personal artwork. It is a joining together of over 20 talented Colorado artists that are providing their own visual statements about the Ocean.”

Participating artists include: Chris Alvarez, Lyn Becker, Natalie Becker, Tamara Brody, Alisha Brown, Deborah Carlson, Elizabeth Carter, Daniella Chace, Susan Dallam, Denise Duker, Pamela Ferris-Olson, Elizabeth Fluharty, Terri Grady, Felicia Kutina, Joanne Lavender, Carrie Makenna, Chuck Mardosz, Laszlo Palos, Jenna Rose, Terri Sanchez, Iveth Schwebke, Gillian Scoville, Karen Storm, Phoung Ta, Trevor Thomas, Janeal Tyler, Paul Warmus, Jessica Wheeler

SOMA, an ADSF Residency Class Show

SOMA, an ADSF Residency Class Show

Opening next Friday, April 3rd, 2025, during the Art District on Santa Fe’s First Friday Art Walk, SOMA will feature works by ADSF’s current Emerging Artists in Residence Mia Carpenter, Liberty Garcia, and Navya Malleppedi. Join us for an opening reception with the artists at the ADSF Studio & Headquarters (858 Santa Fe Drive) from 6:00-9:00pm.

SOMA explores the body as a vessel of inheritance, transformation, and self-reckoning. Through themes of cultural identity, womanhood, and the weight of tradition, the works in this exhibition examine how the physical form carries both personal and ancestral narratives. A gold gift from mother to daughter becomes a symbol of lineage, love, and expectation—an offering that binds past to present. The body, too, is a gift, yet it can also feel like a cage, shaped by societal expectations and the struggle for autonomy.

As one artist navigates the complexities of feeling trapped within the constructs of womanhood, another unearths the spiritual and physical imprints of her heritage. SOMA is a meditation on what is given, what is carried, and what is reclaimed—tracing the body’s role in the inheritance of identity. Carpenter, Garcia, and Malleppedi will be showcasing new works created during their time as residents in Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe, in addition to older works.

Clay Artists
Connie Christensen throws clay on a wheel to create graceful functional pottery. Macy Dorf also specializes in functional pottery in additional to building large abstract sculptures that are inspired by the geology and mythology of the canyon lands of the southwest. James Garnett’s functional and sculptural clay pieces, have a contemporary Asian aesthetic that is quiet and unassuming yet still makes a statement.

Painters
Lisa Calzavara paints landscapes, focusing on high contrast and interesting light structures to develop compositions with movement. Pat Finley uses resin to create flowing abstract works in dynamic colors. Kris Iltis believes the most delicious way to embrace this life is to paint it, and so she explores shapes, light, color and movement as she experiences it. Jon Koenigsberg’s paintings are created in the moment and are not intended to convey any sort of message, although he hopes it gives you a sense of wonder and makes you happy. Bev Thomas paints woodlands, waterways and mountains to encourage others to experience the colors, changing forms and the simplicity of it all.

Jewelry Artist
Teresa Preston’s jewelry pieces are contemporary interpretation of objects and icons that reflect the beliefs and customs of indigenous people throughout the world, using warm, earth toned stones and metal.

Fiber Artists
Terise Harringon Phillips works in fiber art, where strict patterns merge with organic growth, and every stitch is a testament to the ebb and flow of creativity.

Mixed-Media
Leigh Cabell expertly collages together discarded material to create beautiful landscape art. Lamecia Landrum hopes that viewers will find little secrets or meanings for themselves in her delightful figurative sculptures. Michelle Lunquist’s creative process involves using a variety of mediums such as paint, collage, and stitching, experimenting with different materials and techniques and allowing the artwork to take on a life of its own.

"The Power of Purpose" at Niza Knoll Gallery

Creativity often demands time, space, and unwavering intention — a truth at the heart of The Power of Purpose, the exhibition presented by the Women’s Caucus for Art Colorado Chapter (WCACO) in celebration of its 35th anniversary.

This special member showcase, one of six exhibitions planned by WCACO for 2025, will open Friday, April 4, from 5 pm to 9 pm at Niza Knoll Galleryand remain on display through Sunday, April 27. Regular gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday, 1 pm to 4 pm, with extended hours on the first and third Fridays of each month until 8 pm for Art District on Santa Fe events. The public is invited to attend the opening reception on Saturday, April 5, from 1 pm to 4 pm, where they will have the opportunity to meet the artists and celebrate this milestone anniversary. Additionally, gallery owner Niza Knoll will be the featured guest speaker at the WCACO general membership meeting on March 19.

Women often balance the demands of home, family, careers, and community — yet still carve out moments to express themselves through art,” said WCACO exhibit curator Barb Hinnenkamp. “This persistence is The Power of Purpose. It’s the inner force that drives us to keep creating despite life’s many demands.”

Located in the heart of Denver’s vibrant Art District on Santa Fe, Niza Knoll Gallery has been a cornerstone of the local arts scene since its founding in 2008. The gallery is known for its thought-provoking conceptual exhibitions and supports regional artists through its participation in community-wide events such as First Friday Art Walks, Third Friday Collector’s Previews, and Sunday Art Walks.

The gallery also hosts rotating special events, guest speakers, and workshops that engage art lovers throughout the city. In addition to its main exhibition space, the gallery features The Mix, a cooperative space showcasing work from eight local artists.

Founder and owner Niza Knoll brings a unique global perspective to her gallery and artwork. Having lived in Vienna, Paris, Montreal, and New York, Knoll credits her diverse cultural experiences with shaping her artistic voice. “Throughout my life, I’ve had to communicate across different languages and cultures,” said Knoll. “This inspired me to explore multiple artistic mediums — from painting and photography to sculpture and motion art — as a way to connect and express myself.”

The Colorado Chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA), established in 1990, is dedicated to creating opportunities for women artists and advocating for equity in the arts. As part of the national WCA, founded in 1972 when it evolved from the College Art Association, the organization has a rich history of supporting women in the arts through leadership development, exhibitions, networking, and art activism. WCA is also known for its Lifetime Achievement Awards, which honor the contributions of prominent women artists worldwide.

Meet the Artist: Alexi Grojean at Moonrise Coffee Roasters

Meet and Greet with our featured artist Alexi Grojean. "The shapes that I draw are called 'Hooeys'. I can remember the first time I drew one. I was in middle school math class, where I was supposed to be taking notes. In the middle of doodling, I had accidentally drawn a shape that seemed to create itself on the page. From that moment on, I found myself drawing that shape over and over. After much experimentation, I have finally discovered what the Hooey is, and how it likes to be presented to the world." -Alexi Grojean
